Swish and Swallow

After eating it is always good to take your drink and do the swish & swallow technique. After eating it is important to do a little rinsing; when unable to brush it is possible to do this by swishing your teeth with your drink.

Lollipop Logic

Q. When eating a lollipop, do you like to bite and chew at it, or do you like to suck on it till it is done???
A. The best way to eat such candies is to bite into them and not allow them to spend a lot of time in the mouth accumulating cavity-causing sugars. So when eating sweets it is better to munch real quick, because the less time they spend in the mouth, the less likely a cavity is to develop.

P’s and C’s of Snacking

We have a little philosophy in our office when it comes to remembering which foods are better for the health of our teeth. Foods like popcorn, potato chips, peanuts and pretzels (P’s) are much better to have as a snack because they don’t contain sugars that cause cavities. So we try to stay away from the C’s - snacks like candy, chocolate bars, cookies and caramel - because they are very high in sugars.

How Dentistry Can Help with Snoring and Sleep Apnea
Filed Under Wellness Based Dentistry® | 1 Comment
I take a keen interest in my patients’ overall well-being. I look at how the mouth impacts the body. In the past several years research has helped us realize how dentistry can help people who suffer from sleep apnea and snoring. Are you aware that sleep apnea is undiagnosed in 80% of cases?
- Not being treated for sleep apnea can possibly reduce your life span by 8 years.
- Snoring is “pathological” - contrary to previous belief that it is “normal”.
Some of the consequences of sleep apnea on our cardiovascular system are:
- 25% of sleep apnea patients have cardiac ischemia.
- 50% of sleep apnea patients have hypertension.
- 40% of people with stroke have sleep apnea.
- 40% of people with a myocardial condition have sleep apnea.
Some of the consequences on our neurocognitive system are:
- Excessive daytime sleepiness.
- Increased motor vehicle accidents, work accidents and poor job performance.
- Lower threshold leading to depression.
- Reduced quality of life.
- 80% of ADD/ADHD diagnosed patients have sleep apnea.
Snoring and sleep apnea are widespread. We have incorporated into our practice specialized screening tools including a pharyngometer, rhinometer and take-home sleep recording devices. We work in conjunction with medical doctors and sleep disorder specialists in order to arrive at a definitive diagnosis. The anti-snoring and sleep apnea intra-oral appliances, which are individually fabricated, help patients have better quality sleep thus increasing their quality of life.

Guide to Being Cavity-Free

Q. If you opened your lunch tomorrow and inside you found a sandwich, a carrot, and a cookie, what would be the order that you would eat in???
A. The answer is sandwich, cookie, then carrot. This is because we don’t want sugar to be the last food we eat, because it accumulates and in a very quick time can start decay. We use such foods like the carrot or a celery stick to clean our teeth after we eat; they act like a brush and brush away the sugars.
