Laser Dentistry

We have been using lasers since 1992. In certain situations, our soft tissue laser removes excess gum tissue to prevent gum disease, as well as releasing tongue ties or other restrictive muscle attachments. It also recontours gummy smiles and enhances cosmetics.
The best part of the laser is that it is painless, with minimum discomfort and no bleeding. There is no “packing” or restrictions to your diet. It truly is a tool of the future in dentistry. If you get mouth sores, our lasers also alleviate the spread of herpes lesions and eliminate pain from apthous ulcers.
Worn edges of front teeth can be reinforced with the tooth-cutting laser. This slows down the wear and eliminates rough edges.
Our newest addition is the laser which is able to remove decay. Instead of the noise and vibration of the conventional drill, we now use the quiet, touchless laser to remove old white fillings and new decay. Most of the time there is not even a need for an anesthetic because it is so painless. However, this laser does have its limitations and cannot be used to remove old amalgam fillings.

For Your Heart! What You Need to Know About Antibiotic Dosage Prior to a Dental Visit
Filed Under Wellness Based Dentistry® | Leave a Comment
In the past, patients who had a medical history of rheumatic fever or mitral valve prolapse were required to take antibiotics prior to dental cleanings and surgeries. Currently only high-risk patients are required to take the pre-medications. Patients with conditions such as mitral valve prolapse, aerotic stenosis, or rheumatic heart disease are NOT required to take an antibiotic prior dental treatment. Please consult your family physician to confirm if this change applies to you.

Enlarged Tonsils May Be Keeping Your Child from Sleeping!

I have been undertaking a sleep study with Dr. Colin Shapiro, a medical sleep doctor, with respect to children’s tonsils and adenoids that may lead to undetected sleep apnea.
At each recall appointment, we are screening for children with enlarged tonsils, which may be an indicator of possible sleeping disorders such as sleep apnea. We check the size of the tonsils to see if they are restricting your child’s air intake.
Sleep apnea can decrease oxygen intake and interfere with your child’s healthy sleep patterns. As a result, your child’s behavior, attention span, and memory may be directly affected.

Bonding or Veneers?

Did you know that bonding is less expensive than veneers, easier to repair, and (in certain situations) can last as long as veneers? Bonding is great to fill in gaps, reshape tooth contours, and widen smiles with minimal tooth reduction!!

Introducing the Periowave
Filed Under Wellness Based Dentistry® | Leave a Comment
We have recently acquired a laser light called Periowave. This new laser will help our hygiene team treat patients with periodontal disease.
Periowave is a technology that works to kill the bacteria associated with periodontal diseases, without the promotion of antibiotic resistance. Periowave utilizes a non-thermal laser combined with a photosensitizing solution designed to kill bacteria associated with the diseases. Killing the bacteria halts the progression of the disease and allows healing to begin.
Periowave is non-invasive, does not use antibiotics, and is comfortable. It can decrease periodontal pocketing.

Filed Under Wellness Based Dentistry® | 2 Comments
We offer reflexology at our office in order to make your dental visit more comfortable.
What is reflexology?
Reflexology is the physical act of applying pressure to the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques. It is based on a system of zones and reflex areas that reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands with a premise that such work effects a physical change to the body. Reflexology is a natural healing therapy based on the principle that there are reflex points in the feet and hands that correspond to every part and organ of the human body.

Dangerous Drinks for Tooth Enamel
Filed Under Wellness Based Dentistry® | Leave a Comment
While energy drinks help our performance, our teeth suffer excessive wear due to the pH level. Most cola drinks contain acids, but energy and sport drinks also contain other organic acids that can speed up damage to the enamel. If you are going to drink sports drinks or colas, drink them quickly and then try to rinse your mouth with water. Or use a straw; it gets past your teeth. Also, resist the urge to brush afterwords, as toothpaste can be abrasive and will work the acids in.

Tips for Teeth-Whitening

When whitening your teeth, the solution’s total effect time is 90 minutes. The maximum effect takes place in the first 30 minutes of application; therefore, overnight wear is not necessary. Consider applying whitening product while watching television or when checking your emails!

Fight Bacteria with Sonic Toothbrushes

Sonic toothbrushes are my favorite style. Did you know the sonic vibrations dismember bacteria and the effects go beyond where the brush is placed?
Also, keep your eyes open for ultraviolet sterilizers for your sonic toothbrush. These sterilization units are stand-alone or sold with sonic toothbrushes.

10-Minute Rule
Filed Under Wellness Based Dentistry® | Leave a Comment
90% of damage occurs after 10 minutes - therefore it is essential to clean away the sugar residue after eating sweets. This can be done by eating something as simple as a piece of cheddar cheese, since cheddar cheese is good for neutralizing acidity.
