10 Ways to Help Prevent Breast Cancer – Part 2

2. Limit or avoid birth control pills
Even the weakest pill contains seven times the amount of estrogen naturally occurring in your body. Research has determined that the single greatest risk factor for future development of breast cancer is lifetime exposure of the breasts to estrogen. It would appear that controlling the influence of estrogen on the breasts would be the single most important method of primary breast cancer prevention.
It was not until 1905 that Theodoor Hendrik Van de Velde, a Dutch gynecologist, showed that women only ovulate once per menstrual cycle. In the 1920s, Kyusaku Ogino, a Japanese gynecologist, and Hermann Knaus, from Austria, independently discovered that ovulation occurs about 14 days before the next menstrual period. Thus the Knaus-Ogino or the Rhythm (or Calendar) method is one of the “biological” forms of birth control. A couple avoids unprotected sexual intercourse just before, during, and just after ovulation.
For over 100 years, the Rhythm Method was promoted by the Catholic Church as the only morally acceptable form of family planning. Ovulation occurs about 14 days before the start of a woman’s period. Since sperm can live inside the vagina for up to 3 days, and an egg can stay fertile in the fallopian tubes and vagina for up to 3 days, unprotected intercourse must be avoided for more than just the day of ovulation. To be safe, a woman should abstain from sex (or use a condom) 5 days before ovulation, and 5 days after.
The effectiveness of the rhythm method depends on how meticulously it is practiced. The study, published in the June 1998 issue of the Journal of Reproductive Medicine, found the technique had an impressive 96% effectiveness rate in preventing pregnancy, comparing favorably to other methods of contraception. Women must keep track of three things: their core body temperature, the fertile days of their cycle as measured by a calendar, and their cervical secretions. This may prove challenging to those women with irregular menstrual cycles who may have to address this issue first.
Let’s face it, it’s a lot easier for a physician to prescribe a birth control pill that will also “regulate” a woman’s cycle than it is to discuss natural forms of birth control, and to treat the underlying cause of menstrual irregularity. Although it is more challenging to discuss this issue, especially with younger women, I have found that it is always worth the effort to get someone off the pill. “Motherhood Inspires Greatness” Mom Profile
Filed Under Mom Talk | Leave a Comment
“Motherhood Inspires Greatness” is the phrase I coined to describe the essence of what drove me to change my life when I gave birth to my first son as a single mom (an entry I will save until later).
Women always ask me what type of mothers I have met who inspired me. Victoria Nolan is one of these women. She was diagnosed at 18 years old with Retinitis Pigmentosa, and at that point had about 5 per cent of her vision left. Growing up, she didn’t like sports because they were quite challenging. She was also unaware of her vision challenges and that they were likely affecting her.
As a legally blind mother of two children, anyone would be impressed by her determination to live a full life with kids in tow. I first met her at a FITMOM class that she attended by taking public transportation with her baby. Her limitations were few and far between and she was, and still is, constantly pushing the envelope. She had her second baby a couple of years later, and her vision continued to worsen.
At her job, as a teacher, she works with children with learning disadvantages. All of her students are so blessed to be taught by someone who faces and overcomes challenges daily. As a leader, she continually gives back and is easily one of the most impressive women I have met. It is a true blessing to be around great people like Victoria who inspire us all to be and give our best to ourselves and the world around us.
Cheers,
Andrea Page
You Don’t Have to Be an “Old Soul” to Be Wise
Filed Under Law of Attraction | 2 Comments
Have you ever called someone an “old soul”? Calling someone an old soul just separates them from you, and makes that kind of wisdom unavailable to you. Well, I have news: pretty much everyone is an old soul. What we call an “old soul” is simply someone who is better at listening to their internal guidance system. Anyone can learn that (including you!), and anyone can have access to deep wisdom at anytime. Isn’t that good news? Kind of ironic that children do this best.
So how does one access some wise guidance from within (and beyond)?
Step 1: Trust yourself, trust that little voice, and trust that the Universe would not put you here without a steering wheel.
Step 2: Slow your brain down. Nothing is that important. Ten deep breaths would be good a few times per day (and meditating once per day would be sheer genius). Now listen for the subtle call toward the life you dreamed of. Everyone has the voice… it’s just that not everyone has developed the skill of listening yet. There’s no time like the present!
Step 3: Be grateful for the great choices you have made based on that little voice and for the blessings you have already received.
Step 4 (the most important step): Know that your birth was not a mistake. You are a powerful co-creator, so loved that you truly are capable of miraculous outcomes. Every three-year-old knows this… and you were three once, too!
Give that little voice a test drive. Start to listen; it requires settling down, letting go, and letting Law of Attraction figure out “how” for everything. Realizing this is a great way to get your brain to “shut up”, so that you can hear the call of your heart.
